Dear CFSB Community,
What a year 2017 was! We had our first athlete compete at the California Regionals, our first athlete to compete nationally through USA Weightlifting, our first two preteens to compete and win their division and classes at AAU Worlds for powerlifting, and so many new PRs and movements achieved. I am quite pleased with the continual growth of our community, which is why the past few months have been difficult for me with regard to decisions that I needed to make. After much deliberation, I have decided to step back from running the operations of CFSB and to sell a majority of my share to long-time member, Matt Fossati.
When I took over ownership of the gym in May of 2016, I had three main goals in mind – one was obvious and the other two were secrets of mine. The first and main goal was to keep our community together. I know I say this often, but we really do have a unique community at CFSB. We have been through so much together and have grown both physically and mentally together, and there is no doubt in my mind that we will remain a tight-knit community for years to come. My second (sort of secret) goal was to get Julian to Regionals. It didn’t matter who, what, or how we did it, his potential was and is obvious and we had to get him there. He was born to CrossFit. My third (secret) goal was to get Janyce competing in Olympic weightlifting. She was built to Oly lift. It was also my hope with the Max Aita seminar that she would get to work with him, and he took it to another level and asked her join his competition team. By no means am I taking credit for all of the hard work that Julian and Janyce have put into their training. My goal was to provide a space for them to do what they needed to do to get the job done, and they did it and exceeded (and continue to exceed) my expectations. I am so unbelievably proud of them and our community’s support of them.
As such, I feel like my purpose for the gym is now complete, and it is my turn to take care of me. Although I have only been official owner for just under two years, we all know that Casey and my role in the gym has been a prominent one for about three years leading up to the transfer of ownership. For the past five years, I have poured my heart and soul into the gym, not allowing much time for me. The gym was never about me or my ego; it was always about our community.
I will still be around to coach and bring Matt up to speed on all things operations. However, once we get him and the coaching schedule settled, I won’t be around as often as there are some areas of my life that I need to focus on and grow and to heal, and unfortunately, I need to step away from the gym to do so. I am very much looking forward to the next chapter of my life, but CFSB will always be part of it. Of course I will be around for The Open to judge and support. I wouldn’t dare miss it.
I am excited to have Matt join our team as he has a fantastic and successful background at running and growing his mobile gaming business, Game Masons. Not many people know this, but Matt was part of a small team that created one of the first WOD-tracking apps called PocketWOD. He’s been in the CrossFit game for a while and understands what is needed for the business to grow and thrive. I am confident he will take CFSB to the next level.
From the bottom of my goofy little heart, I am beyond grateful for your support, your belief in me to take over this wonderful community and your trust. This has been an exciting, challenging, and kickass experience. Thank you.

Hey gang, hope everyone is staying sane from being indoors! We are on a limited schedule again due to the air quality. Although it appears that the air quality is improving, please be smart and don’t overexert yourself. The winds are supposed to pick up again on Wednesday, so please check back here as well as on our Facebook and Instagram accounts for up-to-date info. This is the perfect time to work on technique, core work, and mobility!

UPDATE: We will be open this week, but on a limited schedule. Open gym will only be available during the class times. The air quality inside the gym isn’t great as the vents in the roof have let in ash and other particles. Honestly, the air at your home is probably way better, but I understand that you may need some reprieve even for an hour. We will be programming strictly technique work until the air quality improves. Anyone from boxes that have been evacuated are welcome to drop in free of charge. Be sure to wear a mask, keep yourselves updated, and stay safe. <3 ~Coach Ninja
The SB County Air Pollution District deemed the air as hazardous (See link on the main Facebook page) so I made the decision to close. Your health is my priority and working out is not conducive to that at the moment. Please stay inside and wear a mask if you must be outside. Direct Relief is currently handing out a limited supply of masks at the Franklin Center on Montecito on the east side. Safety first.

What do you stand for?
Are you one to talk about all of the cool things that you’re going to do, or do you put those words into action?
Do you take short cuts or do you have it in you to put in 100% effort? So often I hear people talk about what they want to do, but rarely any follow through. To get where you want to be, there has to be 100% effort and focus on your part to get there. No one is going to do it for you. Ultimately, only you know what you need and want.
So often I see on social media the “final product” in the form of photos. But what went on behind the scenes of that photo? Photoshop, filters, drugs… did they put in the actual work to train intelligently and sculpt their bodies, or is it all a facade?
Take a moment and ask yourself, “What do I stand for? What am I willing to sacrifice to get where I want to be? What am I willing to do to get where I want to be?” Only you can decide the route you take. Whether you decide to give 100% or take a shortcut, that is up to you. However, own up to whatever decision you make and take full responsibility.
In the end, your success comes down to your integrity.
The October Athlete of the Month is our lovely ray of sunshine, Mr. Luis Beltran! He brings so much energy and fun to every class he attends. Not only do we appreciate his fantastic energy, we also appreciate the hard work he has put in over the past few months. His gymnastics movements are getting more fluid and stronger, and his lifts are getting more efficient and heavier. You can’t deny this man’s zest for life and fun and hard work. Congrats, Luis!!!
Here’s what Luis has to say about his journey…
“I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and graduated from San Marcos High in 2002. I attended college at SBCC for a couple years then moved up to Santa Maria for a few years. I wasn’t very active until I started college. I got really into the whole globo gym thing and did that for a few years but found myself getting bored. I tried the personal training route but found that not only was it expensive but I wasn’t getting the results I wanted. My job at Social Services was pretty sedentary so I was looking for something that would really challenge me. Fast forward to November 2011 when I was living in Grover Beach; one of my friends at the time told me about CrossFit. I remember it was a Saturday, a week before Thanksgiving that he told me about CrossFit. I was intrigued so that very Monday I showed up at CrossFit Five Cities and never looked back. I was instantly hooked. I enjoyed the workouts and camaraderie at CrossFit Five Cities until a back injury and necessary hernia surgery put me on the sideline for about a year. I rehabbed my injuries and went back to CrossFit on my own unaffiliated. I eventually moved back to Santa Barbara in May of 2014 and signed up at Fishers Strength and Health. At that time CrossFit SB and Fishers were sharing the same space. CrossFit wasn’t in my budget at the time but I enjoyed watching the classes and trying out some of the free community classes. Eventually I started losing motivation working out on my own and wasn’t working out as much as I should. I decided it was time to go back to working out at a box in group classes again. I knew I wanted to join CrossFit SB since I had already met some of the people. I contacted Naomi in March of this year and have been loving it ever since. This place keeps me on my toes and forces me to get better in a safe way. The workouts are fun and I’ve made friends in the process. I’m glad I get to call CrossFit SB my Home box.”
The average age of a homeless person is 9 years old, and approximately 20% of homeless children in our country are represented in California.
It is our goal, in collaboration with kettlebells4kids, to further our mission to bring fitness to those with financial and lifestyle barriers, as fitness has been proven to improve a child’s ability to learn, reduce social and emotional stress, and positively impact overall physical and mental health.
We also intend to bring awareness to the community that the word “homeless” does not only apply to adults, and that by coming together, we can help break the cycle of homelessness by starting with children.
Join us for a fun-filled morning with a workout for both adults and children, raffle, and a game sponsored by local favorite Taffy’s Pizza. CrossFit Santa Barbara will provide breakfast snacks and beverages, and free childcare will be provided by Bright Horizons Family Solutions. Other sponsors include Alaris Fitness and The SANDBOX.
